Franz Rosenzweig and Edith Stein: Implications for Contemporary Jewish-Christian Dialogue
Termin: 07.09.2023
Beginn: 18:00 Uhr
Ort: Katholische Akademie in Berlin, Hannoversche Str. 5, 10115 Berlin

Leora Batnitzky’s public evening lecture considers Franz Rosenzweig’s and Edith Stein’s conversion stories and their subsequent conceptions of Judaism and Christianity for the purpose of thinking about contemporary Jewish-Christian dialogue. She argues that focusing on the role of gender in Rosenzweig’s and Stein’s respective claims about the relationship between Judaism and Christianity allows us to better recognize not just Stein’s supersessionism but also Rosenzweig’s inverted supersessionism.  This comparison reflects the continued challenges of Jewish-Christian dialogue, but by understanding Rosenzweig’s and Stein’s positions in the context of their personal conversion stories, it also points to an important path forward. In conversation with Antoine Lévy OP the evening offers an opportunity to explore past and present challenges of Jewish-Christian dialogue.
