Literature in Exile

Öffentlicher Abend zur Tagung in englischer Sprache
Termin: 10.07.2023
Beginn: 19:00 Uhr
Ort: Katholische Akademie in Berlin, Hannoversche Str. 5, 10115 Berlin

States and state-cultures are once again undermined in our time and experiences of exile relived. What does exile do to literature and to literary theory? The literature specialist Kader Konuk will speak about Erich Auerbach, a German-Jewish scholar who was forced to flee Nazi Germany and spent much of his career in exile. Konuk will explore Auerbach’s groundbreaking work on literary representation and how his experience of exile influenced his scholarship. Andreas Keller, another expert of modern literature, will talk about Franz Werfel, an Austrian-Jewish writer who also fled Nazi persecution and found refuge in the United States. Keller will discuss Werfel’s literary output during his years in exile and how it reflected his experiences of displacement and loss.
