As the conference takes place on the occasion of Professor Eveline Goodman-Thau’s 90th birthday, Prof. Gabriela Shalev will give a more personal view of her experience as a woman representing Israel at the global arena. Therefore, the lecture is titled “(A Woman) Representing Israel at the UN – fifteen years ago and nowadays”.
Prof. Gabriela Shalev is a senior faculty member at Ono Academic College and was, for 2 terms (six years, 2014-2020), the chairperson of the Israel Council for Higher Education’s (“Malag”) Committee for Appointment of Professors in Law, Business Management and Social Science. Prof. Shalev completed a two year term (2008-2010) as Israel’s Ambassador to the United Nations, the first woman in Israel to hold this position.
Since returning to Israel Prof. Shalev has joined several academic councils and public bodies and has been elected for a second two year term to the Board of Directors of Bank Leumi Le-Israel Ltd. (2011-2017). She served twice (2012, 2013) as the head of the Sapir Prize Committee (the Israeli Booker Prize). Today she serves as Chair of the Public Council of the Yitzhak Rabin Center, Chair of the Executive Committee of the Kibbutz Contemporary Dance Company and Chair of the Shulamit Aloni Prize for Arab and Jewish Works of Art. In addition, she was appointed as a member of various search committees, including the search committee for candidates for the position of the Attorney General of Israel.
Until 2002 Prof. Shalev was a Professor of Law at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem.
